Vojtech Loffler

A cultured, open minded and well-travelled man, Löffler admired the timelessness Egyptian art, the inspiring beauty of Antiquity, the monumental classical form and the unparalleled genius of Phidias.

Known predominantly through his smaller, lyrical pieces, Löffler nevertheless left his mark on the public space in the region of Košice as the author of several monuments. More recently, his name became inextricably tied to the museum that bears his name and is a lasting testimony to his works that are on display in its permanent exhibition area.

Löffler first exhibited his works independently in 1937 at the Eastern Slovak Museum, which was at that time the centre of art in the region of Eastern Slovakia. His works combine contemporary sculptural form with the classical outlook and tradition. Taking realism as a starting point, the artists applied his poetics and unique ability to capture the emotional quality of a story both to portraiture and, especially in his career, to genre art and social motives.
