Július Hegyesy - Black Sun

02. 02. 2023

The Black Sun exhibition presents to the public the drawings of the artist Július Hegyesy (1933 – 2018). He was born in Hosťovce, lived in Košice, (Slovakia) worked at the University of Prešov, where he taught drawing. He studied drawing at Ľudovít Feld‘s studio, later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava at the studio of professor Dezider Milly and Peter Matejka. His entire work is based on drawing, so the exhibition presents this part of his work. All his life drawing was a meditation for him, a possibility to express the subtlest vibrations of the soul, the purest materialization of his feelings and opinions. He liked to look at the objects, observe it, create contact with it, whether it was a portrait, still life, open landscape, forest interiors or nudes. The line of drawing developed from a meticulous youthful drawing into a spontaneous, automatic expression that was based on reality, but had an increasingly abstract character towards a minimalist expression. He remained in the ethereal world of simplicity, depth and philosophical exploration. The viewer does not perceive the details, only the essentials that create the final impression. His work is a peaceful, harmonious, silent world. It is humbly clean and readable. Analyzing his work means understanding and accepting the artist himself, his philosophy of life, wisdom, unwavering opinion and the pilgrimage of his thoughts searching for simplicity, harmony and truth. He was satisfied by what was closest to him, what he liked and what is commonly present in all human lives. The exhibition presents portraits, forest interiors, country yards, landscapes, nudes, as well as his previously unexhibited student drawings, everything created mainly with his favorite black charcoal.
